Mahakumbh

Kumbh is the name of the vessel, which was used to store the nectar produced in the churning of ocean of milk after the rigorous fight by gods and the demons in the sky, for twelve days and nights (equivalent to twelve years of humans). Some drops of this nectar possessed, spills on earth at various places like Allahabad, Hardiwar, Ujjain and Nasik. In India this is considered to be the most pious time to get rid of the ill and possess more pious credits, learn the purpose of journey of life and return back to the eternal father in heaven.

The Maha Kumbh is celebrated every Hundred and forty four years at Prayag, Purna Kumbh Mela is celebrated every twelve years at Prayag, Ardh Kumbh Mela every six years in Haridwar and Prayag, and Kumbh Mela every three years at Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. The auspicious mela is celebrated to render service to the big saints and take bath in the holy river Ganga for washing away the sins one has done in his life. In Indian mythology it is considered to be a great opportunity to purify our souls by being a part of this mega event, serving saints and bathing in the river water. The Maha Kumbh mela goes on for twelve days and nights and more than 100 million people gather here from across the globe. The Maha Kumbh Mela was held in 2013, on January 14 at Prayag, where a gathering of 100 million people attended and took bath in holy river Ganga.
